Cytomegaloviruses: From Molecular Pathogenesis to Intervention
Many health professionals rely on journal articles to keep up with advances in their field because textbooks are often 1–2 years out of date by the time they come to press, and are far more expensive than the occasional PDF downloaded from a university library Web site. This 2-volume text on cytomegalovirus (CMV) is costly and cites data from before 2012, but provides a solid foundation on whic...
متن کاملPrevention of Cellular Suicide by Cytomegaloviruses
As intracellular parasites, viruses rely on many host cell functions to ensure their replication. The early induction of programmed cell death (PCD) in infected cells constitutes an effective antiviral host mechanism to restrict viral spread within an organism. As a countermeasure, viruses have evolved numerous strategies to interfere with the induction or execution of PCD. Slowly replicating v...
متن کاملHumoral and cell-mediated immunity to cytomegaloviruses.
Specific immunologic resistance mechanisms to cytomegalovirus (CMV) have not been extensively studied in either normal subjects or immunosuppressed renal allograft recipients. Such studies are in progress in my laboratory. Humoral immunity to CMV appears to be unimpaired in infected transplant patients. The neutralizing (NT) antibody titers in 24 allograft recipients with active CMV infection w...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequences of Mandrillus leucophaeus and Papio ursinus Cytomegaloviruses
The complete genome sequences of Mandrillus leucophaeus and Papio ursinus cytomegaloviruses were determined. An isolate from a drill monkey, OCOM6-2, and an isolate from a chacma baboon, OCOM4-52, were subjected to pyrosequencing and assembled. Comparative alignment of published primate cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) showed variable sequence conservation between species.
متن کاملManipulation of NKG2D Ligands by Cytomegaloviruses: Impact on Innate and Adaptive Immune Response
NKG2D is a potent activating receptor expressed on NK cells, NKT cells, γδ T cells, and CD8 T cells. NKG2D recognizes cell surface molecules structurally related to MHC class I proteins induced by infection or other type of cellular stress. The engagement of NKG2D leads to NK cell cytotoxicity and cytokine secretion or to a co-stimulation of CD8 T cells. Both human and mouse cytomegalovirus (CM...
